aspergers homework Disorder be exempted from doing homework? Dr. Tony Attwood. A major cause of anguish for children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, their families and and punishment main, teachers is the satisfactory completion of homework. Why should this group of children have such an America's Cultural Identity Essay emotional reaction to the mere thought of having to start their homework and such difficulty completing assigned tasks? There may be two explanations. The first is based on their degree of stress and mental exhaustion during their day at school and the second is due to their profile of cognitive skills.
It is essential that we recognise the degree of stress experienced by such children, as the signs can become evident in main, their behaviour and mood. The signs include the child who is kraft foods uk, described as a Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde in that the indicators of stress are not conspicuous at school but the child is crime main, a very different character at kraft foods uk, home. They may be quiet and main, compliant in the classroom but intolerant and aggressive immediately they return home. Essay. Some children become extremely anxious in the morning before going to school and school refusal or walking out of school can be a sign of unbearable stress. Crime And Punishment Main Character. Other children can express the signs at school by episodes of extreme anxiety or anger, with incidents of panic or disruptive and explosive behaviour. Others suffer chronic stress, which contributes to a clinical depression. When I talk to children with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome who are having difficulty learning the social curriculum and coping with the stress of school, they often explain that they want a clear division between home and school. Their comment is “School is for kraft foods uk, learning, home is for fun or relaxation” Thus the prospect of interrupting their much needed and deserved fun and relaxation with homework is more than they can cope with.
The following range of strategies are designed to minimise the and punishment main character, impaired Executive Function, accommodate their profile of cognitive skills and help the child complete their homework assignments with less stress for the child and family. Create a learning environment. Jack Mckinley. The area where the main character, child works must be conducive to concentration and learning. A useful model is the Essay, child’s classroom with appropriate seating, lighting and removal of any distractions. The distractions can be visual such as the crime character, presence of toys or television, which are a constant reminder of what the what does gatsby from daisy, child would rather be doing or auditory distraction such as the noise from electrical appliances and the chatter of siblings. Crime And Punishment. Ensure the working surface only has equipment relevant to the task. Their working environment must also be safe from curious brothers and sisters. A daily homework timetable can be made by a parent with guidance from the teacher to define the expected duration and content of each homework activity or assignment. This can be extremely helpful if there are problems with the child’s allocation of time to each homework component.
Sometimes the homework can take hours when the teacher intended only several minutes on a specified task. A timer can be used to during the 1840s, living in california, remind the child how much time is remaining to complete each section of homework. It is also important to ensure that time scheduled for homework does not coincide with the child’s favourite television program. If it does, they may have priority use of the video recorder and crime and punishment main, can watch the The Power and the Holiness, program after their homework. If regular breaks are necessary to promote concentration, the work can be divided into segments to indicate how much work the child has to complete before they can take a momentary break. The usual mistake is to expect too much prolonged concentration.
Teacher’s preparation of the homework. The teacher can highlight key aspects of the homework sheet, written material and questions so that the child knows which aspects are relevant to their preparation of the assignment. They can ask the child to formulate their plan before commencing the assignment to ensure their work is coherent and logical, especially if the homework is an essay. If the assignment takes several days to complete, it is main, important that the Cultural, teacher regularly reviews the child’s rough drafts and progress, which also increases the likelihood that it will be completed on time. Memory problems If the child has difficulty remembering exactly what was set for homework and remembering relevant information during homework, a characteristic of impaired executive function, a solution is to character, buy an executive toy. A small cassette recorder used for in california, dictation can provide a record of the teacher’s spoken instructions and the child can add his or her own comments or personal memo to main, the recording to remind them of key information. The child and their parent will then know exactly what was said and what is relevant to the task. Another strategy is to what does want from, have the telephone number of another child in the class to ask them for the relevant information. A homework diary and planner can help the child remember which books to take home and the specific homework for each evening.
An executive diary or ‘filofax’ from a stationary store may make this strategy more appealing to the child. The techniques are explained as being appropriate for adult executives rather than for children with learning problems. Supervision The child may have difficulty getting started or knowing what to do first. Crime And Punishment. Procrastination can be an does gatsby from issue and a parent may have to supervise the start of the homework. Once the child has started, this is not the main, end of the kraft foods uk, supervision. A parent will also need to be available if the child requires assistance when they are confused and to ensure that they have chosen the appropriate strategy. There can be a tendency for such children to have a closed mind to alternative strategies and a determination to pursue an approach when other children would have recognised the signs that it would be wise to crime main character, consider another approach. A technique to show that there is more than one line of thought is to provide the child with a list of alternative strategies to solve the Identity, particular problem.
The child may need to know there is a plan ‘B’. Parents and teachers soon become aware of the degree of supervision required which can be a major problem for a parent with other family commitments when the child is doing their homework. Supervision is also necessary to help the child prioritise, plan, assist with word retrieval problems and maintain motivation. Motivation can be enhanced by crime, specific rewards for concentration and effort Emotion Management Children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder are notorious for their difficulty coping with frustration and criticism, and their inability to manage their emotions. They can become quite agitated when confused or having made a mistake. An adult will need to what gatsby want daisy, be available to and punishment, help the child remain calm and America's Essay, logical. The adult will also need to model calmness, which can be difficult when both child and crime and punishment main character, adult are confused as to what to do.
It can end in tears for both parties. America's Essay. Children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder often enjoy having access to main character, a computer and gatsby from, may be more able to understand material if it is presented on a computer screen. Material presented by crime and punishment main character, a person adds a social and linguistic dimension to the situation, which can increase the child’s confusion. Teachers should consider adapting the homework so that a considerable proportion of the work is conducted using a computer. Word processing facilities, especially graphics and grammar and spell check programs are invaluable in improving the kraft foods uk, legibility and quality of the finished product. If the parent is unable to help the child solve a particular problem, a solution is to come to an arrangement with the teacher where by the teacher is crime main, contacted by telephone without hesitation as to the time of day or night and they can talk directly to the child. Regular use of this approach can lead to a significant reduction in the type and amount of homework. Jack. Children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder require special consideration when learning new material. Homework should primarily be designed to consolidate and practise known information rather than introducing new concepts. Another characteristic is a difficulty explaining their reasoning using speech.
The child may provide the character, correct solution to a mathematical problem but not be able to use words to explain how they achieved the galen mckinley, answer. Their cognitive strategies may be unconventional and intuitive rather than deductive. One may need to accept their correct solution even if the logic is unclear to the neurotypical mind. One problem with this characteristic is that it may be difficult for the parent to correct the alternative reasoning when the child has a ‘mental block’. Teaching a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder requires special skills and a parent is not expected to have those skills. And Punishment Main Character. As a parent, one is also more emotionally involved than a class teacher and Holiness Essay, it can be difficult for crime, them to be objective and emotionally detached. One option is to hire a homework tutor to provide the skilled guidance and supervision.
However, this may be beyond the financial resources of The Power and the Understanding Holiness Essay most families. If all these strategies are unsuccessful, what is the alternative? ‘Should children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder be exempted from doing homework?’ If the strategies outlined in crime main character, this article are unsuccessful or unable to be implemented, then my reply is ‘yes’. Sometimes this advice is to the great relief of the child, their parent and probably their teacher. The Power Understanding Essay. You can quote me on this. Follow @WhiteHouse for live updates during President Trump's Speech. Support President Trump's vision to make America great again. President Trump's Joint Address to Congress. Mr. Speaker, Mr. And The Glory: Understanding Holiness? Vice President, Members of Congress, the First Lady of the United States, and Citizens of America: Tonight, as we mark the conclusion of our celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded of our Nation's path toward civil rights and the work that still remains.
Recent threats targeting Jewish Community Centers and vandalism of crime and punishment Jewish cemeteries, as well as last week's shooting in Kansas City, remind us that while we may be a Nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in galen, all its forms. Each American generation passes the torch of crime and punishment main character truth, liberty and justice –- in an unbroken chain all the way down to mckinley the present. That torch is now in our hands. And we will use it to light up the world. I am here tonight to crime main character deliver a message of unity and strength, and kraft foods uk, it is a message deeply delivered from my heart. A new chapter of American Greatness is now beginning.
A new national pride is sweeping across our Nation. And a new surge of optimism is placing impossible dreams firmly within our grasp. What we are witnessing today is the crime main Renewal of the American Spirit. Our allies will find that America is once again ready to lead. All the nations of the world -- friend or foe -- will find that America is strong, America is proud, and kraft foods uk, America is free. In 9 years, the and punishment United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of our founding -- 250 years since the day we declared our Independence.
It will be one of the great milestones in the history of the world. But what will America look like as we reach our 250th year? What kind of country will we leave for our children? I will not allow the mistakes of recent decades past to define the course of our future. For too long, we've watched our middle class shrink as we've exported our jobs and wealth to foreign countries. We've financed and built one global project after another, but ignored the fates of America's Cultural Identity our children in the inner cities of crime character Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit -- and so many other places throughout our land. We've defended the borders of other nations, while leaving our own borders wide open, for during, anyone to cross -- and for drugs to pour in at a now unprecedented rate. And we've spent trillions of dollars overseas, while our infrastructure at home has so badly crumbled.
Then, in and punishment character, 2016, the earth shifted beneath our feet. The rebellion started as a quiet protest, spoken by families of all colors and creeds -– families who just wanted a fair shot for their children, and a fair hearing for during, their concerns. But then the quiet voices became a loud chorus -- as thousands of citizens now spoke out together, from cities small and large, all across our country. Finally, the chorus became an earthquake – and the people turned out by the tens of millions, and they were all united by one very simple, but crucial demand, that America must put its own citizens first . Main? because only The Power Understanding Essay, then, can we truly MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Dying industries will come roaring back to life. Heroic veterans will get the crime and punishment character care they so desperately need. Our military will be given the resources its brave warriors so richly deserve. Crumbling infrastructure will be replaced with new roads, bridges, tunnels, airports and railways gleaming across our beautiful land.
Our terrible drug epidemic will slow down and ultimately, stop. And our neglected inner cities will see a rebirth of hope, safety, and opportunity. Above all else, we will keep our promises to the American people. It's been a little over a month since my inauguration, and Cultural, I want to take this moment to update the Nation on the progress I've made in keeping those promises. Since my election, Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors, Sprint, Softbank, Lockheed, Intel, Walmart, and many others, have announced that they will invest billions of dollars in the United States and crime and punishment main character, will create tens of thousands of Glory: Essay new American jobs. The stock market has gained almost three trillion dollars in value since the election on November 8th, a record.
We've saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars by bringing down the price of the fantastic new F-35 jet fighter, and will be saving billions more dollars on contracts all across our Government. We have placed a hiring freeze on non-military and and punishment, non-essential Federal workers. We have begun to jack galen drain the swamp of government corruption by imposing a 5 year ban on lobbying by executive branch officials –- and a lifetime ban on becoming lobbyists for a foreign government. We have undertaken a historic effort to eliminate job?crushing regulations, creating a deregulation task force inside of every Government agency; imposing a new rule which mandates that for every 1 new regulation, 2 old regulations must be eliminated; and stopping a regulation that threatens the future and livelihoods of crime our great coal miners. We have cleared the way for the construction of the Keystone and Dakota Access Pipelines -- thereby creating tens of thousands of jobs -- and I've issued a new directive that new American pipelines be made with American steel.
We have withdrawn the jack United States from the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership. With the help of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, we have formed a Council with our neighbors in Canada to character help ensure that women entrepreneurs have access to the networks, markets and capital they need to start a business and live out their financial dreams. To protect our citizens, I have directed the does gatsby Department of Justice to character form a Task Force on Reducing Violent Crime. I have further ordered the Departments of kraft foods uk Homeland Security and Justice, along with the Department of State and the Director of National Intelligence, to coordinate an aggressive strategy to dismantle the criminal cartels that have spread across our Nation. We will stop the drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth -- and we will expand treatment for and punishment character, those who have become so badly addicted. At the same time, my Administration has answered the America's Essay pleas of the crime character American people for immigration enforcement and gatsby, border security.
By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions of dollars, and make our communities safer for everyone. We want all Americans to succeed –- but that can't happen in and punishment main character, an environment of lawless chaos. We must restore integrity and the rule of law to our borders. For that reason, we will soon begin the jack galen mckinley construction of a great wall along our southern border. As we speak, we are removing gang members, drug dealers and criminals that threaten our communities and prey on our citizens. And Punishment Character? Bad ones are going out as I speak tonight and as I have promised. To any in Congress who do not believe we should enforce our laws, I would ask you this question: what would you say to the American family that loses their jobs, their income, or a loved one, because America refused to uphold its laws and of worlds, defend its borders?
Our obligation is to serve, protect, and defend the citizens of the United States. We are also taking strong measures to protect our Nation from Radical Islamic Terrorism. According to data provided by the Department of Justice, the vast majority of individuals convicted for terrorism-related offenses since 9/11 came here from crime main character, outside of kraft foods uk our country. We have seen the attacks at home -– from Boston to San Bernardino to the Pentagon and yes, even the World Trade Center. We have seen the attacks in France, in and punishment character, Belgium, in collisions of worlds, Germany and and punishment, all over the world. It is not compassionate, but reckless, to kraft foods uk allow uncontrolled entry from places where proper vetting cannot occur.
Those given the high honor of admission to crime and punishment the United States should support this country and the 1840s, hispanics in california, love its people and its values. We cannot allow a beachhead of terrorism to form inside America -- we cannot allow our Nation to become a sanctuary for extremists. That is why my Administration has been working on improved vetting procedures, and we will shortly take new steps to keep our Nation safe -- and to crime and punishment character keep out what does want from daisy those who would do us harm. As promised, I directed the Department of crime and punishment Defense to develop a plan to demolish and destroy ISIS -- a network of during the 1840s, lawless savages that have slaughtered Muslims and and punishment main, Christians, and men, women, and children of all faiths and beliefs. We will work with our allies, including our friends and allies in the Muslim world, to extinguish this vile enemy from our planet.
I have also imposed new sanctions on kraft foods uk, entities and and punishment, individuals who support Iran's ballistic missile program, and reaffirmed our unbreakable alliance with the State of what Israel. Finally, I have kept my promise to and punishment appoint a Justice to the United States Supreme Court -- from my list of 20 judges -- who will defend our Constitution. I am honored to Cultural have Maureen Scalia with us in crime and punishment main character, the gallery tonight. Her late, great husband, Antonin Scalia, will forever be a symbol of American justice. During In California? To fill his seat, we have chosen Judge Neil Gorsuch, a man of main incredible skill, and deep devotion to the law. He was confirmed unanimously to the Court of Appeals, and The Power Understanding Holiness, I am asking the crime main Senate to swiftly approve his nomination. Tonight, as I outline the next steps we must take as a country, we must honestly acknowledge the circumstances we inherited.
Ninety-four million Americans are out galen mckinley of the labor force. Over 43 million people are now living in poverty, and over 43 million Americans are on food stamps. More than 1 in 5 people in their prime working years are not working. We have the worst financial recovery in 65 years. In the last 8 years, the past Administration has put on more new debt than nearly all other Presidents combined. We've lost more than one-fourth of our manufacturing jobs since NAFTA was approved, and we've lost 60,000 factories since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001.
Our trade deficit in goods with the world last year was nearly $800 billion dollars. And overseas, we have inherited a series of tragic foreign policy disasters. Solving these, and so many other pressing problems, will require us to work past the differences of party. It will require us to tap into the American spirit that has overcome every challenge throughout our long and storied history. But to accomplish our goals at crime main, home and abroad, we must restart the engine of the American economy -- making it easier for companies to do business in the United States, and of worlds, much harder for companies to crime leave.
Right now, American companies are taxed at one of the highest rates anywhere in the world. My economic team is developing historic tax reform that will reduce the tax rate on our companies so they can compete and thrive anywhere and hispanics living, with anyone. At the same time, we will provide massive tax relief for crime and punishment character, the middle class. We must create a level playing field for American companies and The Power and the Glory: Holiness, workers. Currently, when we ship products out of America, many other countries make us pay very high tariffs and crime character, taxes -- but when foreign companies ship their products into America, we charge them almost nothing.
I just met with officials and workers from a great American company, Harley-Davidson. In fact, they proudly displayed five of their magnificent motorcycles, made in the USA, on the front lawn of the White House. At our meeting, I asked them, how are you doing, how is business? They said that it's good. What Does Gatsby? I asked them further how they are doing with other countries, mainly international sales.
They told me -- without even complaining because they have been mistreated for so long that they have become used to and punishment character it -- that it is very hard to do business with other countries because they tax our goods at such a high rate. They said that in one case another country taxed their motorcycles at 100 percent. They weren't even asking for change. But I am. I believe strongly in galen, free trade but it also has to be FAIR TRADE. The first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, warned that the abandonment of the protective policy by the American Government [will] produce want and ruin among our people. Lincoln was right -- and it is time we heeded his words. I am not going to let America and its great companies and workers, be taken advantage of and punishment character anymore. I am going to bring back millions of jobs.
Protecting our workers also means reforming our system of kraft foods uk legal immigration. The current, outdated system depresses wages for our poorest workers, and crime and punishment main, puts great pressure on taxpayers. Nations around the world, like Canada, Australia and Essay, many others –- have a merit-based immigration system. It is a basic principle that those seeking to enter a country ought to be able to support themselves financially. Main Character? Yet, in America, we do not enforce this rule, straining the very public resources that our poorest citizens rely upon. Understanding Holiness Essay? According to the National Academy of Sciences, our current immigration system costs America's taxpayers many billions of crime main character dollars a year. Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and during living in california, instead adopting a merit-based system, will have many benefits: it will save countless dollars, raise workers' wages, and help struggling families –- including immigrant families –- enter the middle class. Another Republican President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, initiated the last truly great national infrastructure program –- the building of the interstate highway system.
The time has come for a new program of national rebuilding. America has spent approximately six trillion dollars in crime character, the Middle East, all this while our infrastructure at home is crumbling. With this six trillion dollars we could have rebuilt our country –- twice. And maybe even three times if we had people who had the ability to negotiate. To launch our national rebuilding, I will be asking the Congress to approve legislation that produces a $1 trillion investment in the infrastructure of the United States -- financed through both public and private capital –- creating millions of new jobs. This effort will be guided by two core principles: Buy American, and Hire American. Tonight, I am also calling on this Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare with reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time, provide better Healthcare. Mandating every American to buy government-approved health insurance was never the America's right solution for America. The way to make health insurance available to everyone is to lower the cost of health insurance, and that is what we will do.
Obamacare premiums nationwide have increased by double and crime, triple digits. As an jack galen mckinley, example, Arizona went up 116 percent last year alone. Governor Matt Bevin of Kentucky just said Obamacare is failing in his State -- it is crime and punishment character unsustainable and America's Essay, collapsing. One third of counties have only one insurer on crime, the exchanges –- leaving many Americans with no choice at all. Remember when you were told that you could keep your doctor, and kraft foods uk, keep your plan? We now know that all of those promises have been broken. Obamacare is collapsing –- and we must act decisively to protect all Americans. Main Character? Action is not a choice –- it is a necessity. So I am calling on The Power and the Understanding Holiness Essay, all Democrats and Republicans in the Congress to work with us to crime and punishment save Americans from mckinley, this imploding Obamacare disaster.
Here are the principles that should guide the main character Congress as we move to create a better healthcare system for all Americans: First, we should ensure that Americans with pre-existing conditions have access to America's Cultural Identity Essay coverage, and that we have a stable transition for Americans currently enrolled in the healthcare exchanges. Secondly, we should help Americans purchase their own coverage, through the use of tax credits and expanded Health Savings Accounts –- but it must be the plan they want, not the plan forced on crime and punishment main, them by the Government. Thirdly, we should give our great State Governors the resources and flexibility they need with Medicaid to galen mckinley make sure no one is crime and punishment main character left out. Fourthly, we should implement legal reforms that protect patients and doctors from unnecessary costs that drive up the price of insurance – and work to bring down the artificially high price of kraft foods uk drugs and character, bring them down immediately. Finally, the time has come to kraft foods uk give Americans the freedom to purchase health insurance across State lines –- creating a truly competitive national marketplace that will bring cost way down and character, provide far better care. Everything that is America's Cultural Essay broken in our country can be fixed. Every problem can be solved. And every hurting family can find healing, and hope. Our citizens deserve this, and so much more –- so why not join forces to finally get it done?
On this and so many other things, Democrats and Republicans should get together and unite for main, the good of our country, and for the good of the American people. My administration wants to collisions work with members in both parties to make childcare accessible and main character, affordable, to help ensure new parents have paid family leave, to invest in women's health, and to living in california promote clean air and clear water, and to rebuild our military and our infrastructure. True love for our people requires us to find common ground, to advance the common good, and to crime and punishment main cooperate on America's Identity Essay, behalf of and punishment character every American child who deserves a brighter future. An incredible young woman is collisions of worlds with us this evening who should serve as an inspiration to us all. Today is crime character Rare Disease day, and joining us in gatsby from, the gallery is a Rare Disease Survivor, Megan Crowley. Main Character? Megan was diagnosed with Pompe Disease, a rare and serious illness, when she was 15 months old. She was not expected to live past 5. On receiving this news, Megan's dad, John, fought with everything he had to save the of worlds life of his precious child. And Punishment Character? He founded a company to look for a cure, and helped develop the drug that saved Megan's life. Today she is during the 1840s, hispanics 20 years old -- and a sophomore at Notre Dame.
Megan's story is crime main about the unbounded power of of worlds a father's love for a daughter. But our slow and burdensome approval process at the Food and Drug Administration keeps too many advances, like the one that saved Megan's life, from main character, reaching those in need. If we slash the restraints, not just at the FDA but across our Government, then we will be blessed with far more miracles like Megan. In fact, our children will grow up in a Nation of miracles. But to achieve this future, we must enrich the mind –- and the souls –- of kraft foods uk every American child. Education is the civil rights issue of our time. I am calling upon Members of both parties to pass an education bill that funds school choice for disadvantaged youth, including millions of African-American and crime character, Latino children. Kraft Foods Uk? These families should be free to choose the public, private, charter, magnet, religious or home school that is right for them. Joining us tonight in the gallery is a remarkable woman, Denisha Merriweather. Crime? As a young girl, Denisha struggled in Glory: Understanding Holiness, school and failed third grade twice.
But then she was able to enroll in a private center for learning, with the crime character help of a tax credit scholarship program. Hispanics? Today, she is the and punishment main character first in and the Glory: Holiness Essay, her family to character graduate, not just from high school, but from college. Later this year she will get her masters degree in social work. We want all children to be able to break the cycle of poverty just like Denisha. But to break the cycle of poverty, we must also break the Identity Essay cycle of violence.
The murder rate in 2015 experienced its largest single-year increase in and punishment, nearly half a century. In Chicago, more than 4,000 people were shot last year alone –- and the murder rate so far this year has been even higher. This is Identity Essay not acceptable in our society. Every American child should be able to grow up in a safe community, to attend a great school, and to have access to a high-paying job. But to create this future, we must work with –- not against -– the men and women of law enforcement. We must build bridges of and punishment main character cooperation and collisions, trust –- not drive the wedge of disunity and division. Police and sheriffs are members of our community. They are friends and neighbors, they are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters – and they leave behind loved ones every day who worry whether or not they'll come home safe and sound. We must support the incredible men and women of crime main character law enforcement. And we must support the Understanding victims of and punishment main character crime. I have ordered the The Power Understanding Holiness Essay Department of Homeland Security to create an main, office to serve American Victims.
The office is called VOICE –- Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement. We are providing a voice to those who have been ignored by our media, and America's Identity Essay, silenced by special interests. Joining us in the audience tonight are four very brave Americans whose government failed them. Their names are Jamiel Shaw, Susan Oliver, Jenna Oliver, and and punishment, Jessica Davis. Jamiel's 17-year-old son was viciously murdered by an illegal immigrant gang member, who had just been released from prison. Jamiel Shaw Jr. was an incredible young man, with unlimited potential who was getting ready to go to college where he would have excelled as a great quarterback. But he never got the chance.
His father, who is in the audience tonight, has become a good friend of mine. Also with us are Susan Oliver and Jessica Davis. Their husbands –- Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver and Detective Michael Davis –- were slain in the line of duty in California. They were pillars of their community. These brave men were viciously gunned down by an illegal immigrant with a criminal record and two prior deportations. Sitting with Susan is her daughter, Jenna. Jenna: I want you to know that your father was a hero, and that tonight you have the Cultural Identity Essay love of an entire country supporting you and praying for crime and punishment, you.
To Jamiel, Jenna, Susan and Jessica: I want you to know –- we will never stop fighting for justice. Your loved ones will never be forgotten, we will always honor their memory. Finally, to keep America Safe we must provide the men and women of the United States military with the tools they need to prevent war and –- if they must –- to fight and to win. I am sending the Congress a budget that rebuilds the military, eliminates the does want Defense sequester, and calls for one of the character largest increases in national defense spending in galen mckinley, American history. My budget will also increase funding for our veterans. Our veterans have delivered for this Nation –- and now we must deliver for them. The challenges we face as a Nation are great. But our people are even greater. And none are greater or braver than those who fight for America in uniform.
We are blessed to be joined tonight by Carryn Owens, the crime main widow of a U.S. Kraft Foods Uk? Navy Special Operator, Senior Chief William Ryan Owens. Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and and punishment main character, a hero –- battling against terrorism and securing our Nation. I just spoke to General Mattis, who reconfirmed that, and I quote, Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies. Ryan's legacy is etched into of worlds eternity.
For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to crime character lay down one's life for one's friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom –- we will never forget him. To those allies who wonder what kind of friend America will be, look no further than the heroes who wear our uniform. Our foreign policy calls for a direct, robust and meaningful engagement with the America's Cultural Identity world. It is American leadership based on vital security interests that we share with our allies across the globe. We strongly support NATO, an alliance forged through the bonds of two World Wars that dethroned fascism, and a Cold War that defeated communism. But our partners must meet their financial obligations.
And now, based on our very strong and and punishment character, frank discussions, they are beginning to do just that. We expect our partners, whether in NATO, in the Middle East, or the Pacific –- to during the 1840s, hispanics take a direct and meaningful role in crime and punishment character, both strategic and military operations, and pay their fair share of the America's Essay cost. We will respect historic institutions, but we will also respect the sovereign rights of nations. 6 Ways to Prevent Cheating on Homework. One of the character, most frustrating aspects of teaching in today#8217;s world is the cheating epidemic. There#8217;s nothing more irritating than getting halfway through grading a large stack of papers only to America's Essay realize some students cheated on the assignment. There#8217;s really not much point in teachers grading work that has a high likelihood of having been copied or otherwise unethically completed. So. What is a teacher to do? We need to be able to assess students. How can we prevent cheating on homework? Like most new teachers, I learned the hard way over the course of many years of teaching that it is possible to reduce cheating on homework, if not completely prevent it. Here are six suggestions to keep your students honest and to keep yourself sane. Crime And Punishment Main Character! One of the reasons students cheat on homework is because they are overwhelmed.
I remember vividly what it felt like to The Power Glory: Holiness be a high school student in honors classes with multiple extracurricular activities on crime main character my plate. Other teens have after school jobs to The Power and the Glory: Holiness help support their families, and some don#8217;t have a home environment that is conducive to studying. While cheating is never excusable under any circumstances, it does help to crime main walk a mile in our students#8217; shoes. If they are consistently making the decision to cheat, it might be time to reduce the amount of kraft foods uk homework we are assigning. I used to give homework every night especially to my advanced students. I wanted to push them. Instead, I stressed them out. They wanted so badly to be in the Top 10 at graduation that they would do whatever they needed to do in order to complete their assignments on time even if that meant cheating. When assigning homework, consider the grade level, maturity, and outside-of-school commitments involved.
Think about the kind of school and home balance you would want for crime and punishment your own children. Go with that. The Power Glory: Understanding Holiness! Allowing students time in class to get started on their assignments seems to prevent cheating to some extent. Crime And Punishment! When students have class time, they are able to knock out jack galen, part of the assignment, which leaves less to and punishment main fret over later. Galen! Additionally, it gives them an opportunity to ask questions. When students are confused while completing assignments at and punishment main character home, they often seek #8220;help#8221; from a friend instead of going in early the Glory: Understanding Holiness Essay, next morning to request guidance from the teacher. Often, completing a portion of a homework assignment in crime and punishment character, class gives students the confidence that they can do it successfully on their own. Plus, it provides the of worlds, social aspect of learning that many students crave. Instead of fighting cheating outside of class , we can allow students to work in crime and punishment main character, pairs or small groups in class to gatsby want from daisy learn from each other. If students are cheating on homework, they probably lack the main, vision for how the work is beneficial.
In order to curb cheating, it#8217;s important to consider the meaningfulness and valuable of the hispanics living in california, assignment from students#8217; perspectives. They need to main see how it is relevant to Identity Essay them. In my class, I#8217;ve learned to assign work that cannot be copied. I#8217;ve never had luck assigning worksheets as homework because even though worksheets have value, it#8217;s generally not obvious to teenagers. It#8217;s nearly impossible to catch cheating on worksheets that have #8220;right or wrong#8221; answers. That#8217;s not to say I don#8217;t use worksheets. I do! But. I use them as in-class station, competition, and practice activities, not homework. So what are examples of more effective and meaningful types of homework to and punishment assign?
Ask students to the 1840s, in california complete a reading assignment and respond in writing. Have students watch a video clip and answer an crime character oral entrance question. Require that students contribute to an online discussion post. Assign them a reflection on gatsby want from daisy the day#8217;s lesson in and punishment main character, the form of The Power Glory: Essay a short project, like a one-pager or a mind map. As you can see, these options require unique, valuable responses, thereby reducing the opportunity for students to cheat on them. If you#8217;re sincerely concerned about students cheating on assignments, consider reducing the point value. Reflect on and punishment main character your grading system. Are homework grades carrying so much weight that students feel the The Power Holiness Essay, need to cheat in order to maintain an A? Each teacher has to do what works for him or her. In my classroom, homework is worth the least amount out of any category. If I assign something for which I plan on giving completion credit, the crime and punishment, point value is even less than it typically would be. Projects, essays, and formal assessments count for much more.
To some extent, this part is out of educators#8217; hands. Much of the during the 1840s, living, ethical and moral training a student receives comes from crime and punishment character home. Jack! Still, we can do our best to crime and punishment create a classroom culture in which we continually talk about integrity, responsibility, honor, and the benefits of working hard. What are some specific ways can we do this? Talk to students about cheating. Collisions! Explain to crime main them that there are different kinds. Many students are unaware, for instance, that the #8220;divide and conquer (you do the first half, I#8217;ll do the second half, and then we will trade answers)#8221; is cheating.
As a class, develop expectations and consequences for students who decide to take short cuts. Decorate your room with motivational quotes that relate to honesty and doing the right thing. Kraft Foods Uk! Discuss how making a bad decision doesn#8217;t make you a bad person. It is an opportunity to main character grow. Share with students that you care about them and their futures. The assignments you give them are intended to prepare them for success. Offer them many different ways to seek help from does daisy you if and when they are confused. Provide revision opportunities for homework assignments. Explain that you partner with their parents and main character, that guardians will be notified if cheating occurs.
Explore hypothetical situations. What if you have a late night? Let#8217;s pretend you don#8217;t get home until after orchestra and Lego practices. You have three hours of homework to do. You know you can call your friend, Bob, who always has his homework done. How do you handle this situation?
EDUCATE ABOUT PLAGIARISM. Many students don#8217;t realize that plagiarism applies to more than just essays. At the beginning of the school year, teachers have an energized group of students, fresh off of summer break. I#8217;ve always found it#8217;s easiest to motivate my students at this time. I capitalize on this opportunity by beginning with a plagiarism mini unit. While much of the information we discuss is about writing, I always make sure my students know that homework can be plagiarized. Speeches can be plagiarized. Collisions Of Worlds! Videos can be plagiarized. Anything can be plagiarized, and crime, the repercussions for stealing someone else#8217;s ideas (even in the form of a simple worksheet) are never worth the time saved by doing so.
In an ideal world, no one would cheat. However, teaching and The Power Glory: Understanding Essay, learning in the 21st century is much different than it was fifty years ago. Cheating? It#8217;s increased. Maybe because of the digital age. Maybe because of differences in morals and values of our culture. Maybe because people are busier.
Maybe because students don#8217;t see how the school work they are completing relates to their lives. No matter what the root cause, teachers need to be proactive about preventing cheating on homework whenever possible. Personally, I#8217;d never advocate for completely eliminating homework. To me, it has the potential and value to teach students many lessons both related to school and life. Still, the #8220;right#8221; answer to this issue will be different for crime each teacher, depending on her community, students, and culture. Do you have different techniques that have proven effective for you? Please share them with us in the comments.

Sampling Nostalgia: “Forever Young,” “Young Forever,” and character, the Impossibility of the Occasional. Okay, so that’s a totally cliched academic title: Strange Phrase: The Things I Will Discuss to Explain the Strange phrase. Anyway. . . I won’t pretend to be an expert on occasional poetry, but I will bet that Pope did not perform “The Rape of the does want daisy Lock” past his prime to a bunch of aging baby-boomers who want to party like its 1712. I’m thinking of anecdotal accounts friends once gave me upon seeing Modern English circa 1997. Of course they wrote and performed other songs besides “I’ll Stop the World (and Melt with You)”, but really, who wants to hear them? Also recall Homer Simpson on Bachmann Turner Overdrive: “They were Canada’s answer to crime main character, CCR. Their big hit was TCB.” When he sees them perform not only can he not wait for “Taking Care of Business,” but he can’t even wait for “the workin’ overtime part.” But I digress, as neither of these examples get to exactly what I mean to mckinley, discuss. While we might dismiss the occasional as too rooted in a particular context and therefore not amenable to crime and punishment main character, its own legacy, I would argue that this situatedness makes the occasional all the and the Understanding Holiness more important and, presently, all the more rare (which is to say impossible). And Punishment! According to Cultural Essay, Wikipedia, “Goethe declared that ‘Occasional Poetry is the highest kind.'” Likewise, Hegel had the and punishment main character following to The Power and the Understanding, say about crime main, it (I can’t believe I am about to agree with Hegel): Poetry’s living connection with the real world and its occurrences in public and private affairs is jack galen mckinley, revealed most amply in crime main character, the so-called pieces d’occasion . If this description were given a wider sense, we could use it as a name for nearly all poetic works: but if we take it in America's Identity, the proper and narrower sense we have to restrict it to productions owing their origin to some single present event and expressly devoted to its exaltation, embellishment, commemoration, etc. But by such entanglement with life poetry seems again to fall into a position of and punishment character, dependence, and for this reason it has often been proposed to America's Cultural Identity, assign the whole sphere of and punishment main character, pieces d’occasion an inferior value although to some extent, especially in lyric poetry, the most famous works belong to this class.
The occasional speaks to a specific moment, to something that had a specific historicity, a particularity, perhaps a singularity. It resists appropriation into a culture of sameness, or at does want, least did. Well, perhaps it never did and I am merely romanticizing what the occasional was. Perhaps better to say that what the occasional could be is a fleeting moment in which representation touches materiality. If considered in an historical manner, the crime main character occasional thereby might offer some understanding of its occasion. That is what gatsby daisy, most likely wishful thinking, but I throw it out there. What the Modern English and and punishment, Homer Simpson examples begin to demonstrate is the fact that the present United States can in no way deal with occasionality.
I see this inability in student essays which rush to kraft foods uk, declare whatever they are about to be the “greatest poem/modernist poem/novel/postmodernist novel/song/album/etc. And Punishment Main Character! OF ALL TIME!” Everything has to be eternal, capable of transmitting meaning to everyone, everywhere, everywhen in the same manner, transparently and without regard to during, historical notions of reading, epistemology, etc. When we are confronted with something new, we try to and punishment, make it something old. I think that this desire is a function of nostalgia, which dovetails with the fact that we don’t give a damn about jack galen mckinley, anything Tony Basil has done since “Hey Mickey.” To be a bit more academic about this issue, let’s just say it’s very much related to Jameson’s lament that postmodernism is bound up with a culture that can no longer think historically. With that, a screed about contemporary music or, rather, a contemporary song and what it means in terms of contemporary culture.
While I do have some idea what happens in the world of music, I have no idea whether the main character things I know about are actually part of America's Cultural Identity, some kind of social vocabulary. I know Beyonce made one of the best music videos of all time, but I have no idea what the song sounds like. That said, I may be making mountains of molehills here. That said, I have some issues with Jay-Z’s “Young Forever.” Before I begin, let me say that if Jay-Z wants to and punishment, use the galen lyrics and music from an older song to make a million dollars, more power to him. I don’t care and would like to see copyright open up a bit for more of this kind of work (although, given the crime and punishment character fact that his use of the song in America's Cultural Identity Essay, question is almost certainly controlled by a mechanical license for crime main character, covering the song and not sampling it, the issue of copyright is not really an issue here). Nonetheless, because the 80s are on my mind constantly, and because I trace many contemporary cultural and political problems in the United States to that period, I take issue with the manner in which Jay-Z appropriates Alphaville’s 1984 song “Forever Young,” which, thank god, has no relation to the Rod Stewart song of the the 1840s, hispanics living same name. What strikes me most about this song and video (or, rather, the combination of the crime main character two) is the utter lack of during hispanics living in california, nostalgia. To contemporary ears, the title “Forever Young” reads as an ode to a better time, the right now/present when we are as beautiful, fit, and carefree as we will ever be.
As I will argue below, Jay-Z seriously (perhaps willfully) misreads the song as such. Of course, it’s not surprising that he does so. A great deal of crime and punishment main character, rock and popular music celebrates youth for one reason or another, and I know more than one person who thinks that The Ramones’ cover of kraft foods uk, Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” is crime character, some kind of America's Cultural Identity, punk rock anthem to youth and its fuck-all attitude. (It’s actually a late song that, like Twain’s Huck Finn , is performed by an older person/group who only understands what he/they had in his/their youth by virtue of no longer being youthful. That self-awareness is the price of maturity and exactly what destroys innocence). In the case of the present song, Alphaville is not singing about being young and the powers that stage of life affords. Rather, this song is a product of a Cold War culture that directly impacted a German band on and punishment character a social/cultural level and, of course, an entire planet, which wondered if they “would drop the kraft foods uk bomb or not.” The end of the first verse further clarifies this issue (lyrics):
Can you imagine when this race is won. Turn our golden faces into main character the sun. Praising our leaders we’re getting in tune. The music’s played by the madman. The race in question is the living arms race, a race that cannot be won. However, there were of course those who at least implied the possibility of victory if not openly claimed it–a logic that derived from Vietnam and would lead to our present situations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus imagining victory here does not refer to the end of the Cold War in peaceful terms, and the praising/getting-in-tune-with the leaders is like drinking the Kool-Aid, swallowing the and punishment bi-polar logic of the Cold War in which the America's Identity Essay only choice is between one side or the other (regardless of what Joshua tells us in Wargames , you cannot choose not to and punishment main, play). Considered in these terms, and given that the video is mainly about the very young and the very old–those who cannot yet understand and mckinley, those who understand all too well–the song’s chorus does not refer to being young in any conventional sense. Rather, it refers to life, a life threatened regardless of that life’s age. That is, the song is about the decline of the world, the death of everything.
I am reminded of the judge in Blood Meridian : If God meant to interfere in and punishment character, the degeneracy of mankind would he not have done so by now? Wolves cull themselves, man. What other creature could? And is what does want from, not the race of man more predacious yet? The way of the world is to bloom and to flower and die but in the affairs of man there is crime character, no waning and the noon of his expression signals the onset of night. His spirit is exhausted at the height of jack galen mckinley, its achievement. His meridian is at main character, once his darkening and the evening of his day. He loves games? Let him play for gatsby want from, takes. This you see here, these ruins wondered at and punishment main, by tribes of savages, do you not think that this will be again? Aye.
And again. Kraft Foods Uk! With other people, with other sons. For the judge, the West and perhaps all the world of men exists in crime main, a state of permanent decline interrupted by mortal attempts to erect eternal monuments meant to stave off the effect of time and the violence of nature. Man (and I use the word knowingly) refuses to die, refuses to admit his mortality. And this logic is precisely that which leads to Cultural Identity Essay, a situation like the Cold War: as empires decline they grasp at straws to maintain their status. In the early to mid-1980s, that grasping had led to the capability of two nations to and punishment main, destroy all life on Earth rather than appear weak and vulnerable. Does Want From! With the Cold War it had appears that man had learned to play for crime and punishment, stakes and would soon cull its own, all of its own. This reading of the Cold War (and McCarthy) is and the Glory: Holiness Essay, overly simple, but the song in question is not altogether complex. Crime And Punishment Main! My point is simply that it is not a song bound up in nostalgia for gatsby from daisy, the past. It does not wish for a simpler time, does not long for the days before atomic power or the Cold War. Rather, it regrets that the future may not exist at all, that everything might end.
The songs final verse alludes top this regret: So many adventures couldn’t happen today. So many songs we forgot to and punishment main character, play. So many dreams are swinging out of the blue. We let them come true. I don’t think that these lyrics allude to past adventures that were better than what is possible in the present so much as the impossibility of adventures period. There is no future and, as a result, any action in the present becomes meaningless. Alphaville longs to be forever young because it wishes to retain the potential of the future, something that the leaders of the world had foreclosed on. Thus the jack galen mckinley song is very rooted in its moment.
It is crime and punishment character, not some eternal anthem to youth, but a statement about the late Cold War. And while my use here of the during hispanics in california term “occasional” is somewhat inexact, it nonetheless gets to the heart of what I am arguing: that the power of this text does not derive from its touching something eternal and ubiquitous but rather from its particularity and for the fact that it only fits within history in its specific situation. Of course, that doesn’t stop Alphaville from and punishment main going all Modern English on us: The song’s Wikipedia page mentions that it has become something of a pop standard. Indeed, it has been covered numerous times. For example, Laura Branigan (of “Gloria” fame) covered “Forever Young” just a year after Alphaville first released it.
Thus she retains the Cold War context and, it seems, just about everything else from the song, and adds very little to the original: I guess I am being somewhat problematic by implying that covers should add to a song, modify it, and respect its specificity. Perhaps. Maybe I am just not a fan of the cover at all. However, I do think that there is of worlds, a way to reconcile this tension, even if I am not going to deal with it here. In any case, Branigan’s interpretation does not add much to Alphaville’s text. It’s inoffensive, but just does not break any ground. Compare that version to this one by character another german band, Die goldenen Zitronen, who cover “Forever Young” as “Fur immer Punk”:
Now Die goldenen Zitronen’s cover is what a cover ought to be: an kraft foods uk, interpretation and resituation (and that’s without even considering the issue of language). They are playing on the notion of being young and equating it with being punk, which reads against the grain in the manner that punks do such things. They use the song as a point of departure even while retaining some of it as a misinterpretation. Of course, my German sucks (viz. Main! nonexistent), so I can’t speak directly to most of the lyrics, but I am sure that whatever the misinterpretation it works because the point is to misinterpret. More important, that misinterpretation situates the song in a new context and allows it to develop its meaning in that context. Branigan’s version largely fails to do so. (Yes, something of a moral argument here.)
Finally, compare each of these versions of the song to Jay-Z’s, entitled “Young Forever”: Now, I can’t be sure if that is the actual music video for the song. Youtube has a number of versions up, although this is the only one that appears as if it could be official. Nonetheless, the fact that the video appears out of sync with the audio gives me pause. Even so, without what I will say about the video, I think that the critique holds true. To begin, this (mis)interpretation falls short. The 1840s, Living! Whereas Die goldenen Zitronen rewrite “Forever Young” as “Forever Punk”, and alters the lyrics as well, Jay-Z wholly appropriates the song’s first verse and chorus without changing them at crime and punishment, all (Again, the lyrics from “Forever Young” in “Young Forever” are not sampled, but covered by Mr Hudson). This appropriation without alteration is and the Glory:, significant because it retains those lyrics which are most explicitly about the Cold War: “are you gonna drop the bomb or not?” Now, I understand that “drop a bomb” can mean a number of different things ( The Simpsons played with this line too), but the lyrics simply don’t make sense in this context as written. While I would probably scoff at what would be a crass use of a rewritten song (a la anything P Diddy has ever done), but at least it would make sense and demonstrate cultural literacy.
By retaining the lyrics as originally written and performed, Jay-Z misreads the original song. Perhaps, again, this misreading is and punishment character, intentional, but it nonetheless falls short of the interesting misreading from and the Understanding Die goldenen Zitronen because it does not resituate the and punishment song in any way, shape, or form. To be a bit clearer, Jay-Z merely adds the collisions of worlds old song to his own. He does not seek a level of abstraction at which the two songs might meet and converge, but rather grafts one to and punishment main character, the other seemingly under the assumption that they are about the same thing, that they derive from The Power and the similar occasions. Crime And Punishment Character! Now, such juxtapositions can be useful and The Power and the Essay, interesting, and I am willing to listen to such arguments. Crime And Punishment Character! Again, my target here is not really Jay-Z, but rather the type of during hispanics, thinking “Young Forever” represents.
What that thinking does is always already approach the past as something amenable to the present, as something that can be easily grasped in this moment without regard to its own moment. The video and lyrics to and punishment character, “Young Forever” bear this reading out. Here’s the Cultural Identity first verse: So we live a life like a video. When the sun is character, always out and you never get old. and the champagne’s always cold. and the music’s always good. and the The Power and the Glory: Understanding Holiness Essay pretty girls just happen to stop by in the hood. and they hop their pretty ass up on the hood of dat pretty ass car. without a wrinkle in today.
cuz there is main character, no tomorrow. just some picture perfect day. to last a whole lifetime. and it never ends. cos all we have to do is daisy, hit rewind.
so lets just stay in the moment, smoke some weed, drink some wine, reminisce talk some shit forever young is in your mind. leave a mark that can never erase me neither space nor time. so when the character director yells cut, I’m forever young… There is something here about life as an icon, living life according to during the 1840s, in california, fantasy rather than reality. However, the lyrics do not critique this lifestyle, and if they don’t exactly celebrate they present it as a matter of fact. This is how Jay-Z lives his life, that’s how we roll. What’s more, the lyrics ask that this way of main character, life last forever. In a very real sense, Jay-Z’s song demands that which Alphaville’s despises: the posturing that comes with power and the desire that power be maintained against all reason, against all decline. The Jay-Z of the video, who seduces numerous women and becomes the victim of violence as a result, is the top dog for jack, whom everyone is gunning, the one who has become so big that he has nowhere to and punishment main, go but down.
Tony Montana. Kraft Foods Uk! And while there may be here some critique of the lifestyle, that critique is no more than metaphorical: no one needs to crime main, take Jay-Z down to become the next kingpin.
